Turbine Hall Bailey Power Plant

Turbine Hall in Bailey Power Plant

One of CJMW’s recent projects involved the redesign of Turbine Hall in Bailey Power Plant in downtown Winston-Salem. Built in 1947 to house the massive turbines that powered the RJR campus, the Bailey Power Plant had been decommissioned in 2000. The challenge: how to make a yawning empty space a second floor, designed to hold massive power equipment and even a crane, into leasable office and flex space? CJMW’s Interior Design team won an invited competition to design the space by maximizing usable and leasable space without losing the beauty of the volume or the history of the building. Custom-designed and fabricated meeting pods can be meeting or office space while leaving room for large events. The project won an AIA Winston-Salem Merit Award for Adaptive Reuse in 2019.
