project story
Founded and based in Winston-Salem, N.C., BB&T is one of the largest financial services holding companies in the nation. Originally an executive education arm for managers and leaders within BB&T, the Leadership Institute has grown to become a transformational leadership development partner for top companies as well as providing research, educational programs and consulting to help develop leaders in the education and non-profit sectors.
BB&T leadership envisioned a new home for the Institute, previously housed in a corporate office park. The new campus will provide participants with a more comprehensive and holistic experience by including guest rooms and purpose-built spaces as well as a direct connection to nature and the land.
The design for the 48-room Institute takes advantage of its 11-acre wooded site and lake views, taking form as a series of connected spaces with a rustic lodge feel. The building’s transparency dissolves the line between interior and exterior so participants and staff feel closely connected to nature. The interiors are warm and inviting, with an elegant simplicity that encourages the contemplation and introspection spurred by the Institute’s programs. Outdoor porches and walkways link the campus buildings together and give participants a place to meet outside. The walkway culminates in a special “treehouse” meeting area.
In addition to guest rooms, the Institute will include a dining venue, conference and large meeting spaces as well as formal and informal smaller areas for collaboration. In addition to the spaces dedicated to programs, the Institute will include significant administrative space to support the program’s consultants as well as needs of the Institute itself.
