Cone Health Women’s and Children’s Center at Moses Cone Hospital units provides a full suite of care to mothers and babies under one roof. The facility includes 44 traditional mother-baby rooms, 18 labor and delivery rooms, 10 maternity assessment rooms, a maternity ER, 4 couplet care rooms, and 18 rooms for specialty care. CJMW’s Interior Design studio worked as part of a large, multi-disciplinary team, providing design and specification services for FFE and Art. The CJMW team worked closely with the building’s interior design team to ensure a cohesive overall aesthetic.

The design team focused on patient and family comfort in patient and public areas; adjustable sleep chairs and couches that transition for sleeping allow family members to stay with patients. In administrative areas, ergonomics and operational efficiency were the goals.  A furniture fair allowed staff to try out options and provide input on furniture selections.

The art package includes works from local artists as well as pieces specifically commissioned for the Women’s and Children’s Center. Hundreds of staff and patients provided feedback via an online survey.

In the main lobby atrium, the team worked with a local artist to design a multi-wall art piece that brings warmth and texture into tall, open space.
