hampton inn smithfield

project story

The owner, an experienced hospitality developer and repeat client, took a strategic approach to this location wanting a destination that would stand out as a one-of-a-kind in a crowded field without shifting budget numbers in an already stringent pro-forma. The design team responded by bringing a boutique hotel design approach to an otherwise brand-standard, prototype hotel to meet the owner’s goal of creating a destination locals would recommend to visitors, and a beacon to call to the impromptu 1-95 traveler.

By focusing on the common areas and creating layered spaces with a few bold yet welcoming elements, the team developed a design that helps this hotel stand out from the crowd. Detailed archways, high ceilings, and custom millwork showcase the architectural elements and beautiful craftsmanship of the construction. A welcoming fireplace greets guests as they check in. Custom furniture a grade above what is standard for the brand includes lounge areas and booths along with community tables and a variety of seating options for guests.

The color palette is neutral with pops of color in art, greenery, and fabrics reflecting the easy-going, casual atmosphere of Smithfield. Unique light fixtures and custom accessories add a lush, layered feel to that of the standard hotel brand prototype.

Coming on-line and opening in the midst of the pandemic, the design team worked strategically with the owner team to ensure the space plan had excellent sight lines throughout, allowing more guests to be supported by fewer staff.
