high point university qubein arena, conference center and hotel

project story

High Point University (HPU) has added a learning facility for hundreds of students, luxurious accommodations for guests, an impressive home to the men’s and women’s basketball teams, and a state-of-the-art center for conferences and major events. The new 282,000 SF Nido & Mariana Qubein Arena and Conference Center, coupled with the Jana and Ken Kahn Hotel and Alo Restaurant bring together unparalleled educational opportunities. The entire facility isused to train and mentor students majoring in hospitality, media, event planning and more.

Key features of this multi-functional reception and event center include:

  • an oval arena with 4,500 seats, luxury suites, concessions, merchandising, and media suite to host basketball games, convocations, and concerts;
  • a 1,500-person multi-function conference center dividable into multiple smaller venues at different scales, up to 12 separate breakout rooms. The audiovisual system includes 54 speakers, two radius screens, and a third screen that is 43 foot wide and as tall as a two-story home;
  • a 30-room boutique hotel and restaurant;
  • athletic training facility with hydrotherapy tubs, hospitality area, high tech audio and video equipment, ticket office, and practice gym.

The building’s design fits seamlessly into the campus’ classical architectural style. Inspired by London’s historic Albert Hall, the arena with its oval domed roof provides the central linkage between the conference center wing and hotel wing. The interior reflects Dr. Qubein’s focus on the student experience, first impressions, and the belief that spaces that feel important support the student’s sense of value and importance.

Rich tones and finishes elevate the experience. Spaces are detailed in accordance with function; terrazzo, warm wood, and streamlined finishes in the arena areas; more lush and intense colors and soft finishes in the conference center and hotel. The team worked to provide the client-requested sense of luxury with consideration for the realities of maintenance, repair, and duplication in a student and public space.
