surgical care affiliates

project story

The new Surgical Center of Greensboro, opened in August 2017, is a welcome consolidation of two smaller facilities that were rapidly becoming technologically outdated and overcrowded.

The 60,000-square-foot Center on Green Valley Road is owned and operated by Surgical Care Affiliates. It replaces two smaller facilities that were built in 1983 and 1993. As demand for surgical services increased and technology evolved, it became apparent that a larger, more modern facility was needed to replace the older buildings and to consolidate general and orthopedic procedures.

CJMW’s architectural and interior design teams, along with and Marasco & Associates (? Not sure their role?), worked with SCA to understand the operations, goals and priorities for the new Center. This information, combined with the team’s extensive experience with health care facilities, informed the design.

Because of site constraints that limited the building’s footprint, the team designed a two-story building. The pre-op area and extended care nursing unit are located on the ground floor, along with the reception area and administrative and staff support areas. On the second floor are the Center’s 15 procedure rooms and recovery areas.

The two-story design allows natural light in to procedure rooms, and their size has increased from roughly 300 square feet each in the former buildings to between 425 and 600 square feet in the new Center. Pre-op and recovery rooms are also larger. To maximize efficiency, two elevators bring patients up from the pre-op area directly to the surgical suite, and a third elevator brings discharged patients down to a covered pick-up area.

Located on four acres, the Center also provides more parking for staff and the 14,000 families who are served each year.

The CJMW architectural team included John Drinkard (principal-in-charge) and Joseph Cargill. Carol Wooley and Peggy Noakes made up the interior design team. Landmark Builders of the Triad was the general contractor.
