CJMW has been working with The Cedars of Chapel Hill since designing the community twenty years ago. As the community continues to expand and demand for levels of service shift, The Cedars needed additional space in the community’s health care center. The expansion also provided the opportunity to expand the existing Health Clinic and Rehab Therapy Gym as well as to add a new Multi-purpose room. The expansion also added 2 wings with 15 beds
in each. The majority are private rooms with full private baths with roll-in showers. Three semi-private suites allow residents who wish it to have more space. Each wing constitutes a household, with its own living room/ den. Built-in cabinetry provides storage and desk space for staff within a residential-feeling design framework. Each household also includes a dining room, scaled to be relatable to the residents, and each connected to a centrally-located warming kitchen for efficient food service.
Clerestory windows allow daylight to flood the Multi-Purpose Room, as well as the Dining and Living Rooms that open onto a covered porch. Large cased openings with glass windows and transoms allow that light through into the corridors as well. Soft blues and greens, warm yellows and beige provide a soothing yet modern palette that builds on the existing palette but responds to the more inclusive, fresh approach desired by the Owners. Resident rooms are also in warm tones; wood-look flooring provides a familiar and residential feel. Lighting and art mediate between the traditionally-designed campus and a newer, fresh and clean aesthetic.
